'[An] addictive tale of intrigue' - the Independent In 1946 Regina Robichard is a rarity. A young New York civil rights lawyer, working for Thurgood Marshall, Reggie stumbles across a letter asking her boss to investigate the case of a young black soldier whose body has been found floating in the river in Mississippi. It fires her zeal. For Reggie, justice is not the only draw to this case. The letter is signed by the reclusive M. P. Calhoun, author of one of the most banned books in the country, a book Reggie loved as a child, about the friendship between three children, black and white, a magical forest - and a murder. Reggie has just three weeks in the South to investigate. But once down in Mississippi, amid the intoxicating landscape of cotton fields and lush plantations, Reggie not only finds herself further away from New York than she had ever imagined, but walking directly into M. P. Calhoun's book, a place where more than one type of justice exists.

Ben Vautier, Niki De Saint Phalle, François Morellet, Louise Bourgeois, Alexandre Hollan, Claude Viallat, Sophie Calle, Bernard Pagès, Jean-Pierre Pincemin, Annette Messager, Gérard Titus-Carmel: eleven major French artists of the last forty years or so, examined in the light of their uniqueness and their rootedness, the specificities of their differing and at times overlapping plastic practices and the swirling and often highly hybridised conceptions entertained in regard to such practices. Thus does analysis range from discussion of the feisty, Fluxus-inspired, free-spirited funkiness of Ben Vautier's work to the various modes of transcendence of trauma and haunting fear generated by the exceptional gestures of Niki de Saint Phalle and Louise Bourgeois, to the alyrical formalism yet imbued with irony and ludicity of François Morellet, through to the serene intensities of Alexandre Hollan'svies silencieuses, the infinite a-signatures of Claude Viallat's adventure in the sheer joy of apoiein of self-reflexive coloration, the powerfully elegant and muscular disarticulations of Bernard Pagès' sculpture, the great sweep through art's history implied by Jean-Pierre Pincemin's chameleon-like gestures, the vast swirling programme of socio-psychological analysis the arts of Annette Messager and Sophie Calle offer in their radically distinctive manners, the obsessively serialised oeuvre of Gérard Titus-Carmel allowing a burrowing deep into the opaque logic of a real though dubious 'presence to the world'.

ÊOf the three standard schools, the Italian is the most frankly melodious. When at its best, Italian vocal melody ravishes the senses. When not at its best, it merely tickles the ear and offends common sense. "A•da" was a turning point in Italian music. Before Verdi composed "A•da," Italian opera, despite its many beauties, was largely a thing of temperament, inspirationally, but often also carelessly set forth. Now, Italian opera composers no longer accept any libretto thrust at them. They think out their scores more carefully; they produce works in which due attention is paid to both vocal and orchestral effect. The older composers still represented in the repertoire are Rossini, Bellini, Donizetti, and Verdi. The last-named, however, also reaches well over into the modern school of Italian opera, whose foremost living exponent is Puccini. Although Rameau (1683-1764), whose "Castor and Pollux" held the stage until supplanted by Gluck's works, was a native of France, French opera had for its founder the Italian, Lully; and one of its chief exponents was the German, Meyerbeer. Two foreigners, therefore, have had a large share in developing the school. It boasts, however, many distinguished nativesÑHalŽvy, Auber, Gounod, Bizet, Massenet. In the French school of opera the instrumental support of the voice is far richer and the combination of vocal and instrumental effect more discriminating than in the old school of Italian opera. A first cousin of Italian opera, the French, nevertheless, is more carefully thought out, sometimes even too calculated; but, in general, less florid, and never indifferent to the librettist and the significance of the lines he has written and the situations he has evoked. Massenet is, in the truest sense, the most recent representative of the school of Meyerbeer and Gounod, for Bizet's "Carmen" is unique, and DŽbussy's "PellŽas et MŽlisande" a wholly separate manifestation of French art for the lyric stage. The German school of opera is distinguished by a seriousness of purpose that discards all effort at vocal display for itself alone, and strives, in a score, well-balanced as between voice and orchestra, to express more forcibly than could the spoken work, the drama that has been set to music.

This is a book of comfort and encouragement for all those facing difficulty or distress, based on the author's own story of the sudden death of his wife. Full of inspiring quotations and stories of hope and courage from all over the world, the text includes letters and poetry from friends and strangers alike - all pointing to the mystery of God's transforming presence. After his wife collapsed and died in a matter of minutes, the author's life was turned upside down as he tried to make sense of his devastating loss. Drawing on the very practical faith he had shared with his wife, he reflected on the world's greater sorrows: the many deaths from AIDS in Africa; the terrorist attacks in America; and the asylum-seeking children trying to fit into Glasgow life. In these stories, the light of Christ shines through human courage and kindness, pointing the way through sorrow to healing and peace. Peter Millar is a minister of the Church of Scotland and was formerly Warden at Iona Abbey. He is the author of best-selling "Iona Prayer Book," "Iona Pilgrim Guide" and "Waymarks."
