Forty years of an exciting life, until the day everything changes abruptly. The accident, which obliges Emmanuel, a professional motorcycle pilot, and a motorcyclist in the national police, to leave the world of valid people and join the handicapped world. In parallel, before the accident, during his coma and even afterwards, some mysterious signs appear and interfere in his life. Chance or synchronicity? Were these signs meant to warn him? Was the accident planned? In order to slow his life down, or make it take a different turn? Through his story, you will discover the hidden face of the daily life of a paraplegic, with all his suffering, psychological and physical, as well as the different steps in his reconstruction, full of obstacles and setbacks. EXCERPT It was 3 o’clock in the morning, on 22nd February 2013, and the alarm clock was ringing. It was time to get up, to serve and represent the French Republic. As every other week, on Friday morning, I turned into a night bird. I drove to Toulouse Central Police Station, where I slipped into my show costume, or should I say my National Police motorcyclist outfit. I joined my colleagues for the regular alcohol level tests, and we all departed together for a precise location, in order to set up the device. That morning, like many other mornings, our spot was located at the Ponts-Jumeaux, a very good place for “catching” drunken road delinquents. My mission was simple – when I say my mission, it was more the motorcyclist’s mission: chasing the naughty drivers who refused to submit to the test, or sometimes even just drove straight into the police roadblock. This mission was one I particularly enjoyed. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Born in 1973, Emmanuel Siaux was a motorcyclist in the French national police for twenty years, France Road Rallye Champion and Team Manager of the French National Police Motorcyclist team. On the eve of his fortieth birthday, an accident on duty confines him to a wheelchair, obliging him to face a new challenge: the long road to reconstruction and learning to live as a paraplegic.

Have you ever wondered if you’ll have the strength to face and overcome all of your life’s countless hardships? Are you tired of being tired, anxious, and worried? Does fulfillment seem like a farfetched dream? If you see more of yourself than you like in these questions, don’t despair. What could be a life-changing experience awaits in Thriving through Life’s Storms. Nina Vera-Vida’s escape from war-torn Bosnia at seven, was just the beginning of a life filled with hardships. Nina endured dehumanizing deprivation and abuse—as well as the loss of her sight to a brain tumor. But what makes Nina a true survivor is that she never gave up. She created a path to rise above it all to inspire others. She developed coping mechanisms to minimize the pain and subsequent scars. What she has since realized is that there are two types of barriers to happiness. External hardships are often random, caused by things, people, or circumstances beyond our control. Internal hardships, on the other hand, are self-inflicted. As we wrap ourselves in the veil of denial we obscure the hardship triggers, making these internal hardships hard to detect. If you are ready to face down your enemies—both internal and external—as Nina has, a new life of fulfillment, freedom, and success can be yours. The ascent won’t always be effortless, but it will be worth it. We stop living when we give up, when we let life’s hardships make us feel helplessly “stuck” in the abyss of stagnation and discontent. Keep in mind Nina’s motivation for writing this book: never give up.

I’m hoping my life story will give insight to people who live and suffer from mental illness and help them receive a clearer form of understanding of their similar diseases in an effort for them to better cope with their everyday lives armed with new knowledge to avoid certain emotional situations when the going gets rough. The importance of staying on prescribed medications cannot be overstated. Saying you’re better when you’re not seems to be the trap that gets many people into trouble. Responsibly going to necessary appointments with therapists to talk about lingering issues, such as social anxieties, dark emotions and explosive anger disorders, as well as deep life sapping depression, is clearly imperative. This story sets in stone all the hard lessons I had to learn and harshly tried to live through; a condition most parents would not wish on their kids. I went through many stages to finally gain an official diagnosis. In this autobiography I revisit the details of my life from 7 years of age to my present age of 42 years. I’m confident my long history with psychological issues will shed abundant light on the ones who have lost hope.

Drawn to the mysteries of tropical rain forests and fascinated by life in the treetops, Meg Lowman has pursued a life of scientific exploration while raising her two sons, Edward and James Burgess. This book recounts their family adventures in remote parts of the world (Samoa, West Africa, Peru, Panama, India, Biosphere 2, and others), from the perspectives of both kids and parent. Together they explore tropical rain forests, encounter anacondas and piranhas, eat crickets as hors d’oeuvres, discover new species, and nurture a family ethic for conservation. The chapters of the book focus on field biology questions, the canopy access methods developed to answer the questions, and conservation or education components of each expedition. Lowman enumerates the challenges and joys of juggling parenthood and career, and the children reflect on how their mom’s work has affected their lives. A rollicking, inspiring book, It’s a Jungle Up There is an upbeat portrayal of how a parent’s career can imprint children, and how children in turn can influence the success and trajectory of their parent’s career.

This is the autobiography of Abdul Salam Zaeef, a senior former member of the Taliban. His memoirs, translated from Pashto, are more than just a personal account of his extraordinary life. My Life with the Taliban offers a counter-narrative to the standard accounts of Afghanistan since 1979. Zaeef describes growing up in rural poverty in Kandahar province. Both of his parents died at an early age, and the Russian invasion of 1979 forced him to flee to Pakistan. He started fighting the jihad in 1983, during which time he was associated with many major figures in the anti-Soviet resistance, including the current Taliban head Mullah Mohammad Omar. After the war Zaeef returned to a quiet life in a small village in Kandahar, but chaos soon overwhelmed Afghanistan as factional fighting erupted after the Russians pulled out. Disgusted by the lawlessness that ensued, Zaeef was one among the former mujahidin who were closely involved in the discussions that led to the emergence of the Taliban, in 1994. Zaeef then details his Taliban career as civil servant and minister who negotiated with foreign oil companies as well as with Afghanistan's own resistance leader, Ahmed Shah Massoud. Zaeef was ambassador to Pakistan at the time of the 9/11 attacks, and his account discusses the strange "phoney war" period before the US-led intervention toppled the Taliban. In early 2002 Zaeef was handed over to American forces in Pakistan, notwithstanding his diplomatic status, and spent four and a half years in prison (including several years in Guantanamo) before being released without having been tried or charged with any offence. My Life with the Taliban offers a personal and privileged insight into the rural Pashtun village communities that are the Taliban's bedrock. It helps to explain what drives men like Zaeef to take up arms against the foreigners who are foolish enough to invade his homeland.

The definitive biography of a larger-than-life president who defied norms, divided a nation, and changed Washington forever Andrew Jackson, his intimate circle of friends, and his tumultuous times are at the heart of this remarkable book about the man who rose from nothing to create the modern presidency. Beloved and hated, venerated and reviled, Andrew Jackson was an orphan who fought his way to the pinnacle of power, bending the nation to his will in the cause of democracy. Jackson’s election in 1828 ushered in a new and lasting era in which the people, not distant elites, were the guiding force in American politics. Democracy made its stand in the Jackson years, and he gave voice to the hopes and the fears of a restless, changing nation facing challenging times at home and threats abroad. To tell the saga of Jackson’s presidency, acclaimed author Jon Meacham goes inside the Jackson White House. Drawing on newly discovered family letters and papers, he details the human drama–the family, the women, and the inner circle of advisers– that shaped Jackson’s private world through years of storm and victory. One of our most significant yet dimly recalled presidents, Jackson was a battle-hardened warrior, the founder of the Democratic Party, and the architect of the presidency as we know it. His story is one of violence, sex, courage, and tragedy. With his powerful persona, his evident bravery, and his mystical connection to the people, Jackson moved the White House from the periphery of government to the center of national action, articulating a vision of change that challenged entrenched interests to heed the popular will– or face his formidable wrath. The greatest of the presidents who have followed Jackson in the White House–from Lincoln to Theodore Roosevelt to FDR to Truman–have found inspiration in his example, and virtue in his vision. Jackson was the most contradictory of men. The architect of the removal of Indians from their native lands, he was warmly sentimental and risked everything to give more power to ordinary citizens. He was, in short, a lot like his country: alternately kind and vicious, brilliant and blind; and a man who fought a lifelong war to keep the republic safe–no matter what it took.

When Amy Scher, an eternal-optimist since birth, finds her near-perfect 25-year-old body falling apart, she is met with pessimistic diagnoses and failed treatments. Stumbling through her “party years” with Ritz-Carlton-like hospital stays and specialists looking at her in stupefaction, her optimism remains, but the chance for recovery from late stage Lyme disease dwindles. Admittedly living a life of clichés such as “nothing is by chance,” “there are signs everywhere,” and “this too shall pass,” her life takes a U-turn after one serendipitous meeting in Maui. She falls into a conversation with a woman who has just returned from India after receiving radical medical treatment. Amy’s love affair with “signs” from the Universe is all she needs after this meeting to propel her research about this treatment—and from there, the adventure begins. Free spirited and fiercely driven, she takes a leap of faith and travels to Delhi, India for an experimental embryonic stem cell treatment. Unsure if she has been given the equivalent of a never-ending ladder in the game of Chutes and Ladders, or is making a medical mistake that will kill her, she dives in, never losing hold of her humor and hope. From the time she steps foot in the magical country of vibrant colors and endless honking horns, she valiantly defends herself against “Eastern philosophical bullshit,” and those suggesting she can think her way back to health. She instead focuses on her place as the first patient with Lyme disease to undergo this treatment and manages to keep her eye on the prize of surviving. She quickly discovers though, healing is much more than just physical. She’ll not only need faith in the stem cells, but also a healthy dose of self-introspect and lessons in the art of ‘letting go.’ This country where pedestrians risk their lives crossing the street, but cars stop for sacred cows, wraps her in its spirit and becomes her greatest teacher. Armed with her self-created motto, “when life kicks your ass, kick back,” she embraces her challenges with gusto and never looks down, reminding herself it’s simply, the wrong way. Scher’s adventures are met with a fresh perspective and childlike curiosity. Her experiences are both hilarious and heartbreaking – from the Auyurvedic massage where she listens to the sound of her own thighs slapping together on a hard table; to her Taj Mahal road trip where people along the way are poverty-stricken and unclothed, but goats are wearing sweaters and jewels. Amy’s no holds-barred attitude will inspire you to see the hidden signs in your own life and challenge your deepest beliefs about healing. This powerful and uplifting story of sheer determination is for anyone who believes in--or doubts--the existence of miracles and the infinite power of self-healing.

THE SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER As former Prime Minister and our longest-serving Chancellor, Gordon Brown has been a guiding force for Britain and the world over three decades. This is his candid, poignant and deeply relevant story. In describing his upbringing in Scotland as the son of a minister, the near loss of his eyesight as a student and the death of his daughter within days of her birth, he shares the passionately held principles that have shaped and driven him, reminding us that politics can and should be a calling to serve. Reflecting on the personal and ideological tensions within Labour and its achievements – the minimum wage, tax credits, Bank of England independence and the refinancing of the National Health Service – he describes how to meet the challenge of pursuing a radical agenda within a credible party of government. He explains how as Chancellor he equipped Britain for a globalised economy while swimming against the neoliberal tide and shows what more must be done to halt rising inequality. In his behind-the-scenes account of the financial crisis and his leading role in saving the world economy from collapse, he addresses the question of who was to blame for the crash and why its causes and consequences still beset us. From the invasion of Iraq to the tragedy of Afghanistan, from the coalition negotiations of 2010 to the referendums on Scottish independence and Europe, Gordon Brown draws on his unique experiences to explain Britain’s current fractured condition. And by showing us what progressive politics has achieved in recent decades, he inspires us with a vision of what it might yet achieve today. Riveting, expert and highly personal, this historic memoir is an invaluable insight into our times.
